Our Pack

The heart of the Painted Wolf Wines community is the pack.

Growers are the heroes of our Pack, and we aim to produce at least one special wine from each of their vineyards, for our range ‘The Pack’. These wines are crafted with the greatest care to reflect the site from which the grapes are grown, and the personality of the individual grower.

Our Pack provides the top quality grapes and other resources which allow us to craft a range of delicious, authentic wines. By enjoying our wines and embracing our world you also become part of our Painted Wolf pack and contribute to the conservation of African Wild Dogs and the beautiful wild African spaces in which they live.

Being nimble and resourceful, our strategy is to share cellar space with winery friends who have excess capacity, in other words to ‘den down’ in other wineries’ cellars. Over our first four vintages we worked in nine different cellars. We work in spaces which allow us to hand punch our red grapes in small open fermenters, and which have small tanks and sufficient refrigeration to allow us to craft small batches of white and rosé wines. For the past few years we have ‘denned down’ in one cellar at which we plan to remain for some years.

One of the benefits of making wine in this manner has been access to the skills and insights of a number of really great wine makers over the years.  Jeremy Borg is in overall control of the wine making, assisted by the team at Leeuwenkuil Family Vineyards, from whom we rent our cellar.

Building our community is the key to our success as a wine producer and conservation advocate.

It is essential that we have access to have a consistently high quality of grapes, which is why Painted Wolf Wines regards the relationship with our grape growers as pivotal, and in recognition of their efforts, a number of our wines are named after the grower.

We are avid fans of the proudly South African grape varietals Pinotage and Chenin Blanc, and these are at the heart of our range of wines. As we source our grapes from warmer wine regions like Swartland and Paarl, we are also focussing on Rhone and Southern French varietals.

In 2015 we launched our wine club to give loyal Painted Wolf followers the opportunity to be part of the pack and have access to special events and wines.
