The story of this wine

Lekanyane is the Tswana name for Painted Wolves. Tswana is the language of South Africa’s North West Province and of Botswana – both areas with relatively good Painted Wolf populations.

Tasting notes

A rich, elegant white ‘Cape blend’, with a bouquet of pineapple, lime, vanilla and a sophisticated minerality which follows through onto the palate and is complimented by a creamy long fresh finish.

Food suggestions

I recommend the wine with full flavoured fish, chicken and pork dishes such as Linguine With Prawns, Baby Tomatoes And Fennel, or with a Creamy Thai Style Coconut Chicken Curry. It is lovely with pâtés and salami too.

The vineyard

These grapes were sourced from a number of different vineyards in Stellenbosch, Paarl and Malmesbury.

Winemaking

The grapes were hand picked into small baskets and taken to both of the cellars where we fermented our 2008 vintage, Solms Delta and Mellasat. I employed a number of different wine making techniques and strains of yeast to try to get a feel for the best vinification method for these grapes.

Approx 50% of the wine was fermented in tanks, and the balance in small oak barrels, 25% of which were new. My ambition was to create a wine with a harmonious palate and a good finish, to be an excellent wine for enjoying with meals. The wine spent seven months in barrel and tank and was bottled on September 22nd 2008. 6300 bottles have been produced

Ageing potential

This wine is drinking well now, but will reward you by being further bottle aged for a year or two after release.

THE DEN

A social wine to be enjoyed with friends and family. Named for THE DEN, the heart of the Wild Dog community. Flavour packed, soft and juicy comfort wines for every day drinking.

PELOTON

A pack of Wild Dogs and a pack of cyclists share the same goal. Whether it is food for the pack or the end of a long road, what remains is the bond between pack members and the ability to unwind and enjoy the company. Company made all the more enjoyable by sharing a good wine, a love of wide open spaces and the Wild Dogs who roam them.

THE PACK

High quality wines carefully hand crafted from our 3 Pack members’ grapes including a number of single vineyard wines named after the vineyard owners.

PICTUS

Named after Lycaon Pictus, the scientific name for Painted Wolf. Each edition of this deluxe Rhone style blend is as rare and beautiful as the Wild Dogs we support. Each year we choose a painting from one of our pack artists to feature on the label and each year we match estimated Wild Dog numbers with the number of bottle we produce. In most cases, the original painting is sold at auction with proceeds donated to wild dog research and conservation.
