The story of this wine

Rare, charismatic, energetic, persistent, social and distinctly cool. We honour Southern Africa most endangered large mammals with wines that capture their character. Painted Dog is a small range of flavour packed, soft and juicy wines for good every day drinking.

Lori Bentley produced a lovely expressive ink and watercolour painting for the label.

Tasting notes

Dry and succulent, the wine offers a rich, creamy stone fruit flavour, with aromas of Peach Melba

Food suggestions

Perfect with almost anything with a creamy sauce such as fish pie or chicken with a cream and mushroom sauce. Also great with roast chicken, roast pork belly with apple sauce, or salmon en croute.

The vineyard

Viognier and Chenin Blanc are harvested from two vineyards in Swartland region. Both of these have irrigation available.

2017 was the third dry vintage on the trot. It was however quite cool coming into the harvest period. We adapted to the conditions by early picking the Chenin Blanc. The Viognier was picked quite ripe and fermented with a small number of French oak staves. We opted for simple cold fermentation with natural yeast followed by a few months of lees contact. The two components had different flavours and textures from which we have endeavoured to produce a well- balanced interesting wine which is a joy to drink.

Ageing potential

This wine should be drunk within 2-3 years of the vintage.
