The story of this wine

Penny Viognier is named in memory and honour of our dear friend Penny Hughes, for her spirit, friendship and courage. It is a rare wine, made in tiny quantities.

Billy and his late wife Penny, were amongst the first investors in our dream, trading grapes for a share in Painted Wolf. Billy is an uncompromising exponent of organic and naturally farmed grapes with a keen interest in biodynamics. From 2013, his Kasteelsig vineyard has been organically certified. Our friend Jenny Metelerkamp who lived with us at Lloyd’s camp, Botswana produced the fine Painted Wolf ink drawing for our logo and the pack labels.

Tasting notes

A beautiful harmonious wine with a powerful exotic bouquet of lime and stone fruit and spicy wood with a long poised finish.

Food suggestions

Pairs well with mild Indian curries like korma and tikka masala. Also creamy seafood dishes and washed rind cheese.

The vineyard

Viognier grapes were sourced from a single block at Billy and Penny Hughes Kasteelsig vineyard in Malmesbury. The vineyard is east facing planted on red oak leaf soils. These non irrigated vines are carefully tended using organic farming methods, producing fruit of exquisite balance. Yields are kept below 6 tons to the hectare.

The grapes were hand picked into small baskets and taken to Mellasat cellar where the grapes were destalked and pumped into a tank. The grapes remained in a tank for 2 days before being pressed into a selection of new and 2nd fill 500 litre French oak barrels – coopered right here in South Africa. A selection of 4 different yeasts was used, 3 cultured strains and natural yeast. The wine has been on its lees for 9 months.

2100 bottles have been produced.

Ageing potential

This wine will develop in bottle over the coming 3-4 years, gaining complexity as it develops in bottle.

A social wine to be enjoyed with friends and family. Named for THE DEN, the heart of the Wild Dog community. Flavour packed, soft and juicy comfort wines for every day drinking.

A pack of Wild Dogs and a pack of cyclists share the same goal. Whether it is food for the pack or the end of a long road, what remains is the bond between pack members and the ability to unwind and enjoy the company. Company made all the more enjoyable by sharing a good wine, a love of wide open spaces and the Wild Dogs who roam them.

High quality wines carefully hand crafted from our 3 Pack members’ grapes including a number of single vineyard wines named after the vineyard owners.

Named after Lycaon Pictus, the scientific name for Painted Wolf. Each edition of this deluxe Rhone style blend is as rare and beautiful as the Wild Dogs we support. Each year we choose a painting from one of our pack artists to feature on the label and each year we match estimated Wild Dog numbers with the number of bottle we produce. In most cases, the original painting is sold at auction with proceeds donated to wild dog research and conservation.
